TFAW Invites You to Go to Hell – Mike Mignola Signing 12/15

From TFAW:
Mike Mignola with TFAW
Things From Another World cordially invites you to go to Hell. Meet Hellboy creator Mike Mignola at the Portland TFAW store December 15 from 7 to 10 p.m. for a Hellboy in Hell signing and gallery show celebrating Hellboy’s return to comics–and Mignola’s return to full interior art. The Eisner Award-winning artist and writer will also be displaying his original art in the store! This is an all-ages event; free food and beer (for those 21+) will be provided.

Mignola rocked comics fans worldwide when his signature character, Hellboy, died in the summer of 2011. However, death can’t keep the world’s greatest paranormal investigator down: Hellboy in Hell follows his adventures in the afterlife and reveals shocking secrets fans have been dying to know. This is the first time Mignola has drawn Hellboy’s ongoing story since Conqueror Worm in 2001!

Non-box customers will receive an extra 10% off everything in the store, while box customers (from all three Oregon TFAW stores) will get an extra 5% savings added to their current box discounts.

KGW Features Geek Trivia, Insults Dingo’s Hair

Although the reporter is bumbling, I’m glad the worthy Geek Trivia night (every other Tuesday, at the Kennedy School) is receiving attention. I don’t take myself seriously enough to care if someone insults me as a geek, but I do think it makes him a fun-hating wet blanket Grinch. I’d rather be us than that dude (Joe Smith).

For more info see the Facebook page for Portland Geek Trivia.

Breaking: TFAW & Hollywood Cancel Walking Dead Screenings

Due to forces outside of their control, Things From Another World (TFAW) and the Hollywood Theatre regretfully announce that they are canceling their free weekly screenings of The Walking Dead Season 3, effective immediately.

TFAW has sponsored free screenings of The Walking Dead with hosts cortandfatboy for two and a half seasons, and is greatly saddened to cancel this popular Portland event, after the Hollywood Theatre received a cease-and-desist letter.

“We’ve had a great run with The Walking Dead, and we are still huge fans of both the comics and the television show,” said TFAW Senior Director of Retail Operations Andrew McIntire. “It’s allowed us to reach out to the community in a unique way, and we’re grateful for all of the awesome people we’ve met through this. We’re sorry to disappoint anyone, but we have no choice in the matter.”

SINA GRACE SIGNING & GALLERY: NOT MY BAG AND LI’L DEPRESSED BOY 11/14

From TFAW:

Sina Grace at TFAW poster

Writer-artist Sina Grace has created beloved cult-hit comics Li’l Depressed Boy and Not My Bag for Image Comics and worked as editorial director for Robert Kirkman’s Skybound imprint–and he’s visiting Portland! Meet him November 14 at the Portland TFAW for a signing and gallery show from 7 to 10 p.m. Free food and beer (21+ with valid ID) provided.

Not My Bag is Grace’s semi-autobiographical tale of working in retail hell. A young artist takes a job at a department store in order to make ends meet, but little does he know that he may meet his end! In this gothic story for fans of Persepolis, Blankets, and The Devil Wears Prada, can the artist withstand competitive pressure, treachery, and high fashion while still keeping his soul?

Working on a comic, or thinking about getting started? Grace recently co-headlined the DIY to Image panel at Tucson Comic Con with Li’l Depressed Boy writer S. Steven Struble, offering tips on how creators can get their books noticed. Make sure to bring your questions to TFAW’s Indy Comics Q & A at 7:30 to get practical advice and suggestions from a creator who has immersed himself in nearly every aspect of the comics industry.

Volunteer at The Swashbuckler’s Ball

This just in: our friends at PDX YAR need your help to make this year’s fundraiser event, The Swashbuckler’s Ball, bigger and better than ever, and they’re seeking volunteers to assist in a variety of capacities! Worried you won’t get to enjoy the event? Never fear: there are plenty of shift options that’ll leave you ample time to enjoy the celebration, and you’ll also get some sweet perks–like free admission!–for your time.

From their recent announcement:

Ahoy, the Swashbuckler’s Ball is looking for a few good scallywags to join the crew and become volunteers. You need not be rated able seaman to apply, we will gladly accept lubbers as long as you are willing to work for your passage.

Volunteers are needed to fill several positions through out the night to include load-in, load-out, security, manning check in and raffle tables, raffle ticket sales and LOTS more. As a volunteer, you will work a roughly 3 hour shift, of which there are three. Generally the shifts will run 5:30-8:30pm, 7:30-10:30pm and 8:30-11:30pm and time assignments are on a first come first serve basis.

So, you are probably wondering what you will get out of this engagement. Well, first of all there is GLORY! But, considering you are probably of a piratical sort, there are some more tangible rewards. These include free admissiona drink ticket and, of course, food.

Be that tickling your interest? If so, hoist your signals and email Jen, our wondrous Volunteer Coordinator, at [email protected].
