Romancing The Nerds: a Valentine’s Day hip-hop concert

Romancing The NerdsWhether you’re single or coupled, if you’re looking for a lively and fun Valentine’s Day plan, PGC member Dangerous Kids has you covered: they’ll be presenting “Romancing The Nerds,” a show featuring artists who are focused on all things comics, video games and science fiction.

From their press release:

Headlining the show will be Adam WarRock, making his first stop on a short west-coast tour. A nationally-recognized comics and pop culture hip-hop artist, WarRock’s press kit is riddled with glowing reviews from outlets like the BBC and Wired, as well as celebrity endorsements including Nathan Fillion (Castle, Firefly), Edgar Wright (Scott Pilgrim, Sean of the Dead) and Marvel author Matt Fraction.

Also joining WarRock on stage will be a new local duo “Michotomy.” Comprised of Portland emcees, Kiew Nikon (Kinetic Emcees & Analog Brothers) & Pwn Toney (Kielen King/Star Pilot’s Revenge), Michotomy will be joined on stage by their friend and local comic shop manager Sean Wynn (aka Badd Wolfe).

Opening the show will be “Bad Habitat,” the local, fan-voted winners of “Jammin” 107.5 fm’s “Open For Snoop Dogg” Contest. Bad Habitat has also opened for Slick Rick, Rahzel, Bizzy Bone, Digital Underground and many more well known acts. They recently released their first full-length album “Scissor Tree” and are already working to produce their next release.

The team at Dangerous Kids is the geeky glue bringing this show together, and their own DJ Switch will be spinning throughout the evening, as well as DJ SugarPDX. For more information, go to www.dangerouskids.net, or get the latest on Dangerous Kids Facebook.

Volunteer at The Swashbuckler’s Ball

This just in: our friends at PDX YAR need your help to make this year’s fundraiser event, The Swashbuckler’s Ball, bigger and better than ever, and they’re seeking volunteers to assist in a variety of capacities! Worried you won’t get to enjoy the event? Never fear: there are plenty of shift options that’ll leave you ample time to enjoy the celebration, and you’ll also get some sweet perks–like free admission!–for your time.

From their recent announcement:

Ahoy, the Swashbuckler’s Ball is looking for a few good scallywags to join the crew and become volunteers. You need not be rated able seaman to apply, we will gladly accept lubbers as long as you are willing to work for your passage.

Volunteers are needed to fill several positions through out the night to include load-in, load-out, security, manning check in and raffle tables, raffle ticket sales and LOTS more. As a volunteer, you will work a roughly 3 hour shift, of which there are three. Generally the shifts will run 5:30-8:30pm, 7:30-10:30pm and 8:30-11:30pm and time assignments are on a first come first serve basis.

So, you are probably wondering what you will get out of this engagement. Well, first of all there is GLORY! But, considering you are probably of a piratical sort, there are some more tangible rewards. These include free admissiona drink ticket and, of course, food.

Be that tickling your interest? If so, hoist your signals and email Jen, our wondrous Volunteer Coordinator, at [email protected].

SUNDAY: Molly Lewis teams up with The Doubleclicks

This Sunday, The Doubleclicks are combining powers with Molly Lewis, whom you may remember from the Internet, to make geeky music in a casual, outdoor show that’s just the thing for summer! From their web site:

Molly Lewis – from YouTube! And Seattle! Will bring down her shiny ukulele and serenade the courtyard outside Bridge City Comics with her songs about history, the Internet, and having Stephen Fry’s babies.

The Doubleclicks, who are local and also geeky, will be there too.

Bring a folding chair if you don’t want to sit on the ground.
It’s going to be great!

These lovely ladies will also be taking their show on the road in September, on a tour of the Eastern half of the U.S., so catch them here in Portland before they take off for distant lands! Get the details on this and their other upcoming shows on their web site, or RSVP on Facebook for the courtyard performance.

SATURDAY: The GeekPortland GeekParty returns!

Just a few months ago, local geek event curator Kenna Conklin of GeekPortland threw a mighty bash for all the geeks of our fair city, celebrating GeekPortland’s birthday with music, trivia, and good times for all. The GeekPortland GeekParty was so enjoyed by all that she went to work planning a second party–and it lands this Saturday! This time around, the GeekParty will be featuring the talents of Seattle-based nerd rock band Kirby Krackle and local darlings The Doubleclicks, as well as their own brand of trivia in the GeekPortland GameShow!

Because we at PGC3 are full of questions, Kenna was kind enough to take a few minutes and tell us more about what went into making the GeekParty happen:

It’s not every day that someone throws a big, nerdy shindig for every geek in town–how was your experience planning the first GeekParty?

The first GeekParty was something that was put in my lap! The Doubleclicks approached me about working with them on a show they had already scheduled with the Broadsides. I jumped at the opportunity and created the GeekPortland GameShow and turned on the hype machine! The night turned out to be a wonderful example of how much fun Portland Geeks can have when they get together. People we already asking when the next one would be that night.

I know you’ve been wanting to bring Kirby Krackle to Portland for quite a while–can you tell us a bit more about that?

I first discovered Kirby Krackle about three years ago after hearing their hit single Ring Capacity. It was such an earworm that I had to have more! Since then, I’ve been trying to spread the word on what a great nerdrock band we have living just up the freeway. It wasn’t until this year that they finally played Portland and I wanted to get them back AS SOON AS POSSIBLE! I’m delighted that they are joining us!

You’ve been bold enough to take on the task of putting on your own trivia segment at the GeekParty–what challenges are there with putting that together?

Writing trivia is HARD! Luckily, I have a Gamemaster, Rich Malena, helping me out. We’ve been writing a lot and culling a lot – trying to get that balance between challenging and fun. We’ve looked into all corners of geekdom for categories and questions. I hope that people will be amused with what we’ve come up with. I definitely have some favorites that I hope get picked!

This party is definitely not to be missed, and tickets are only available at the door! Be sure to arrive early, so you can throw your hat in the ring for the GameShow and potentially win fabulous prizes from local geek businesses. You can learn more about the event on GeekPortland, or join the crowd on Facebook.

And, don’t forget to bring some canned food–car2go Portland, will also be there collecting food donations for the Oregon Food Bank! In exchange for your donation, car2go will waive new member fees, or offer bonus drive time to current members.

SATURDAY: The Doubleclicks team up with Amanda Palmer!

Beloved geek musicians and PGC3 Members, The Doubleclicks, are making the most of their July, playing shows with the kind of geeky celebrities that’d make most of us dizzy with joy. This Saturday, they’re continuing that trend as part of “A Lifetime of Opporunity,” a fundraiser to promote literacy, by playing at The Q Center alongside the lovely Amanda Palmer, as well as local folk-inspired duo ALAMEDA. Doubleclick Angela took a few moments from their busy schedule to share a few more details about their adventures:

Doing a show with Amanda Palmer is a pretty big deal–how did The Doubleclicks come to be involved in this benefit?

“Show organizer Noirin Plunkett sent us the most exciting Tweet ever last month: “Wanna open for Amanda Palmer?… DM Me!” I’m still not sure how she heard of us, but I’m glad she did. We got to talking and she told us about the Literacy Bridge organization and their Talking Book program, and we all got very excited about this event.

There are going to be full sets of music from us, Alameda and Amanda Palmer. We’re very excited to be in a show with these extremely talented musicians, and I expect the crowd is going to be energetic and awesome, as Amanda’s crowds always are.”

A little Twitter-shaped bird tells me that you had some exciting times in San Diego recently–care to tell us a bit about your SDCC experience?

“We had a great time at SDCC! We primarily went down to San Diego to play w00tstock, the variety/music show run by Paul and Storm, Wil Wheaton and Adam Savage from Mythbusters. That was an amazing experience – the show turned out fantastic and there were surprise cameos from folks like Ed Brubaker, LeVar Burton and Grant Imahara. That is not to drop names, but just to give you an idea – that is what SDCC is like. It’s insane.

We also hung out with Molly Lewis and plotted with her about our upcoming show together at Bridge City Comics on August 19, which was lots of fun. Geek Girl Musicians unite!”

This Saturday’s show is, unfortunately, sold out, but you can still donate to Literacy Bridge and support their work in Ghana, helping improve health through literacy and their “Talking Book” programs. If you’re jonesing for the finest in nerd-folk tunes, The Doubleclicks will be capping off their July next weekend, with a performance at the GeekPortland GeekParty, and have plenty of shows coming up in August.

Be a costumed extra for Revolver Digital Media Studio

If you like dressing spectacularly and being part of film productions, don your masks and your finest masquerade wear, and be a part of a music video shoot by Revolver Digital Media Studio this coming Saturday.

From their press release:

Beloved by fans for his bluesy/soulful vocals, stick-in-your-head melodies, and high energy shows, singer, songwriter, and musician Roshan Maloney has gained the reputation of a serious double-threat performer.

Revolver Digital Media Studio (Revolver DMS) partnered with Roshan in 2011 to produce a music video for his hot single “Run Out of Luck”. The video received positive reviews from both critics and fans for its energetic cuts and warm imagery. A little over a year has past and we’ve decided to produce a more ambitious video with higher stakes and a
closely guarded story line. One scene in the video takes place at a concert during a masquerade ball and we need several extras to attend in the proper attire. Details for the shoot are below; if you’d like to attend please email the producer to receive proper instructions and your confirmation for the shoot.

Breakdown: We’re shooting in a ballroom; it’s a masquerade event so we ask that you dress appropriately. Your attendance will add great production value to the video and mean a lot to everyone involved.

We’ll run through a couple of scenes several times, food is currently being arranged for all who attend.

Time/Date:
Shooting will take place between 09:00 a.m. and 07:00 p.m. on Saturday June 2nd

Address:
West End Ballroom
1220 SW Taylor St., Portland, Oregon 97205
