Just a few months ago, local geek event curator Kenna Conklin of GeekPortland threw a mighty bash for all the geeks of our fair city, celebrating GeekPortland’s birthday with music, trivia, and good times for all. The GeekPortland GeekParty was so enjoyed by all that she went to work planning a second party–and it lands this Saturday! This time around, the GeekParty will be featuring the talents of Seattle-based nerd rock band Kirby Krackle and local darlings The Doubleclicks, as well as their own brand of trivia in the GeekPortland GameShow!
Because we at PGC3 are full of questions, Kenna was kind enough to take a few minutes and tell us more about what went into making the GeekParty happen:
It’s not every day that someone throws a big, nerdy shindig for every geek in town–how was your experience planning the first GeekParty?
The first GeekParty was something that was put in my lap! The Doubleclicks approached me about working with them on a show they had already scheduled with the Broadsides. I jumped at the opportunity and created the GeekPortland GameShow and turned on the hype machine! The night turned out to be a wonderful example of how much fun Portland Geeks can have when they get together. People we already asking when the next one would be that night.
I know you’ve been wanting to bring Kirby Krackle to Portland for quite a while–can you tell us a bit more about that?
I first discovered Kirby Krackle about three years ago after hearing their hit single Ring Capacity. It was such an earworm that I had to have more! Since then, I’ve been trying to spread the word on what a great nerdrock band we have living just up the freeway. It wasn’t until this year that they finally played Portland and I wanted to get them back AS SOON AS POSSIBLE! I’m delighted that they are joining us!
You’ve been bold enough to take on the task of putting on your own trivia segment at the GeekParty–what challenges are there with putting that together?
Writing trivia is HARD! Luckily, I have a Gamemaster, Rich Malena, helping me out. We’ve been writing a lot and culling a lot – trying to get that balance between challenging and fun. We’ve looked into all corners of geekdom for categories and questions. I hope that people will be amused with what we’ve come up with. I definitely have some favorites that I hope get picked!
This party is definitely not to be missed, and tickets are only available at the door! Be sure to arrive early, so you can throw your hat in the ring for the GameShow and potentially win fabulous prizes from local geek businesses. You can learn more about the event on GeekPortland, or join the crowd on Facebook.
And, don’t forget to bring some canned food–car2go Portland, will also be there collecting food donations for the Oregon Food Bank! In exchange for your donation, car2go will waive new member fees, or offer bonus drive time to current members.
